Fr. Shaju Varkey – Parish Priest


Fr Shaju

Fr Shaju Varkey was born and brought up in Cochin, Kerala in southern India. After studies in Chemistry, Philosophy and Social Science in India, he worked as a teacher and a social worker where he and friends were instrumental in setting up three orphanages.

He began formation for the priesthood at St John’s Seminary, Wonersh and was ordained to the priesthood on 12th July 2008 by the Right Reverend Mar James Pazhayattil, Bishop of Irinjalakuda, Kerala, at Saint Mary’s Church, Thazhoor, Kerala.

His first appointment was as assistant priest at St Peter’s, Woolwich. Fr Shaju was appointed as parish priest of Our Lady of the Crays parish in February 2012. In November 2015 he was then appointed as Parish Priest of St Boniface Tooting.

Fr Shaju is involved with the Ongoing Formation of Priests and has responsibility for Recently Ordained and Arrived Priests and Support Groups. In July 2015 Archbishop Peter Smith appointed Fr Shaju as Episcopal Vicar for Ethnic Chaplaincies. He also works as an Advocate in the Marriage Tribunal.

Fr. Peter Audu joined the Parish team of St. Boniface Tooting in January 2019. He has over Twenty (20) years of working experience in Pastoral, School administration, and development.

Fr. Peter celebrates his birthday on 5th January, and his spiritual birth on 24th December. He is from Zangon Kataf LGA of Kaduna State in Northern Nigeria. He grew up in a military environment which also inspired his ambition to become a military personnel even after his ordination.

His academic backup include Bachelor degree in Sacred Theology from St. Augustine’s Seminary Jos, Nigeria; Post Graduate Diploma in Education Zaria; MA in Justice & Peace Studies from Missionary Institute London, and Certificate in Psychotherapy and Counselling from WPF Therapy London. He has also attended many professional courses in the area of development. Some of these include Building Capacities for Peace Training Nairobi, Certificate in Project Management for Development Practitioners Netherlands, Certificate in Conflict and Mediation Skills at the Mennonite Centre London, and a Certificate in Radio and TV Production.

Before coming to Tooting, Fr. Peter has worked as Assistant Priest and Parish Priests in many Parishes both within and outside his home diocese of Kaduna. In the education sector, he was Vice Rector at St. Joseph Minor Seminary Zaria, Principal of Sacred Heart College Ibadan and Administrator of St. Matthew’s schools Kaduna. He was also a Part Time Lecturer at the Good Shepherd Major Seminary for Two academic sessions. In Administration, Fr. Peter worked at the Catholic Secretariat of the Nigerian Bishops Conference both as Director of Church & Society department and National Justice Development and Peace /Caritas Nigeria, Abuja.

He has been in North London as Chaplain in the Nigerian Catholic Chaplaincy England & Wales. He comes with a wealth of experience to support the Parish Priest and add value to our Parish Community.
