Herbert Vaughan (1832-1902) who became bishop of Salford and later Cardinal Archbishop of Westminster, founded the St Joseph’s society for the Catholic foreign missions, know as the Association for the Propagation of the Faith, at Mill Hill London.
The society trains priests who minister in third world countries, who proclaim the Gospel and help in the material needs of the people. They are also aided in their work by the Franciscan Missionaries of St Joseph.
The financial support of these countries is derived from the help of the home parishes in this country, Ireland, Scotland and Wales. Members of the Association who contribute to this, retain Red Mission Boxes in their homes, where they are encouraged to place their donations, the contents of which are emptied twice yearly and forwarded to the headquarters of the Society at St Joseph’s College, Lawrence Street, Mill Hill London NW7 4JX.
