In days gone by “Easter Duties” was a phrase in common currency. Nowadays it is rarely heard. This is probably because it dates from a time when people rarely went to Communion. In those days the period between Ash Wednesday and Trinity Sunday became the time for going to Confession (if necessary) and then Communion. Today things have changed and, thankfully, most people see going to Communion as the same thing as going to Church on Sunday.
But Lent is still a good time to set ourselves right with God and each other through the Sacrament of Reconciliation. It goes hand in hand with our Lenten practices. It is scarcely necessary any longer to tell people that communicating once a year is the bare minimum required of a Christian. But it might occasionally be good to remind ourselves that taking stock of ourselves and turning to God, in the grace of the Sacrament of Penance, is good for the soul.
